Hospice Taranaki has received $360,000 this year in extra government funding, but still have to raise $1.5million from the community.
Health Minister Jonathan Coleman announced $52 million extra hospice funding nationally, to be spread over four years. Taranaki’s share is $1.4m.
Hospice Taranaki chief executive Kevin Nielsen said the money is to “restore hospice funding in the face of increasing patient numbers.”
“We made a loss last year and a loss the year before.”
Since 2009  the increases the Taranaki DHB have been able to pass on have been very, very small, he said.
“And in the meantime our patient numbers have continually gone up.”
